Code Geass recs

It's been awhile. Again. But in the meantime, I had a sudden craving for Code Geass and "marathoned" it, emphasis on the quotations. And I realized once again what an amazing piece of pop culture Code Geass is. I would call it a masterpiece if it wasn't for all the problems, sheer amount of crack, and contrived plot points. Still, despite all that, it remains my personal favorite anime. A lot of the things I hope will be realized in Berserk has happened here (in different ways) in Code Geass. Therefore, recs!

Code Geass: The Psychology of Lelouch and Suzaku by 7TeenWriters
Comments: Pretty much aligns with how I view Lelouch and Suzaku. Although I would add that their roles gets played with or zigzagged sometimes.

How Kururugi Suzaku Beats Chivalry to a Pulp and Wears It Proudly In Code Geass by JSTORMING
Comments: Comparison of Suzaku to Lancelot of Authorian myth and character analysis.

Eating the Dead by YamiPaladinofChaos
Pairings: none
Summary: "The dead do not rest quiet, and Lelouch finds himself haunted as the days count down towards the Requiem's finale."
Comments: One of my favorite Code Geass one-shots. It's sad, it's a little funny, but mostly, it's sad. Beautiful title and the summary says it all: Lelouch and his ghosts in his final days.

Revenant by YamiPaladinofChaos
Pairings: none
Summary:"Revenge is like a ghost. It takes over every man it touches. Its thirst cannot be quenched, until the last man standing has fallen. Post R2, no pairings."
Comments: Unofficially regarded as fanfiction's version of Code Geass R3, the sequel. YamiPaladinofChaos has a way of writing that not only stays true to the characters and the world but to the themes and the message of the story. This is a fan sequel where, when the peace is threatened, those closest to Lelouch fight for the world he died for.

Higanbana by teno-hikari
Pairings: Ohgi/Lelouch
Summary: "The equinox flower symbolized bewitching, unluckiness, grief, parting, and death. Falling in love with an amnesiac Zero; Ohgi wonders if this is Mother Nature’s way of teaching him that even the most inauspicious of her creations are still beautiful."
Comments: Yes, Ohgi/Lelouch, that's a new one. And I love it! Unfortunately hasn't been updated since 2011 but this story gave us the gift of a serious, divergent Ohgi/Lelouch AU. Now I need to know: how will the Black Knights react to the revealing of Zero's identity now that Ohgi's fallen in love with Zero? What about the beginning of R2 and Rolo? Will this be a happy ending with Prime Minister Ohgi and Lelouch still as Zero? Or will Zero Requiem happen regardless?
This is almost a long character study because of the duality (triality?) Ohgi sees in the amnesiac Lelouch, the commanding and charismatic Zero, and Lelouch Lamperouge the student and everything in between. I'm invested in Ohgi trying to discover what makes Lelouch ticks and connecting the parts he's seen in his Lelouch to Zero and Lamperouge. Also, the sex scenes are pretty hot. Kinda funny how it's a practically established fact that Lelouch is a very vocal bottom. I guess when he decides to do something, he's doing it 110%.

Create Anew by AotA
Pairings: none
Summary: "When Lelouch dies, all the obstinate hate in Suzaku's heart dies with him. The new Zero finds himself wishing that Lelouch had never been forced to go this far. He wishes that he could have blotted out the loneliness he saw in Lelouch's eyes as the supposed demon bled out upon his throne of lies. He never expects his wish to actually come true."
Comments: Strangely enough, for being unfinished and two-chapters, this is my favorite Code Geass fic. Purely from its word choice. In almost 12K words, it manages to recapture everything I love about Code Geass and distill it to its essense to make the most unique back-in-time fic I've ever read. They're back at the beginning, Suzaku and Lelouch and the Shinjuku Ghetto but this time around one of them is trying to reach out and rebuild that bridge between them. AKA, Suzaku the Loyal? I'm intrigued.

Holidays and MGS recs!

Happy Holidays!

Ocelot/Krogan Gangbang
Pairing: Big Boss/Ocelot
Prompt: Mass Effect AU where Big Boss is a Krogan, Ocelot has a pregnancy kink, and BB arranges for him to get gangbanged by a bunch of Krogans.
Comments: Need I say more?

fell aleep with stains by radical
Pairing: Big Boss/Ocelot
Prompt:  "Could I make a request for MGS3 era Bosselot with A/B/O dynamics? With omega!Ocelot going into heat in the middle of fighting alpha!BB? Has to be 100% consensual on both ends, and BB deciding yes Ocelot is a good mate I will keep this as mine now kthx."
Comments: Superhot. And surprisingly poignant for a story with such a prompt.

Proxy by P-Sebae
Comments: This isn't just a fic. This is an entire world with artwork and Metal Gear designs. What's fun about this is how close to canon it could have been. Taken out of context, yeah it's strange to have a mech Ocelot but in the world of Metal Gear Solid, it's eerie how the past gets repeated instead.

Caballo, Bota, Y Sombrero by panpinecone
Pairing: Ocelot/OMC
Prompt:  "Ocelot and at least one actual cowboy. Come on. Let him live the dream a little."
Comments: I generally don't do OCs but this is amazing. Ocelot's dream cowboy who is hopefully much, much healthier for Ocelot than Big Boss. Plus bonus fanwork.

Comments: Concisely hits all the main themes and connecting them to the respective characters and allusions (i.e.: Moby Dick, Lord of the Flies, and 1984) within the game.

MGS writings
Critical Analysis of Metal Gear Solid V: The Boldfaced Lie by -V-S-
Comments: An amazing, amazing essay on the story of MGSV and how it fits into the MGS saga. A must read! This explains so much why I thought MGSV argues itself as the anti-Batman; how Big Boss allows the legacy of "Big Boss" to become larger than life--larger than one individual--and why that is not necessarily a good thing. Because MGSV still is about the fall of Big Boss.

Simply Being Loved by Zarla
Pairing: Otacon/Solid Snake
Summary: "As Snake's inevitable death loomed closer, he began to draw away from them somewhat. That was understandable. But that didn't mean Otacon couldn't at least try once in a while."
Comments: Sweet and depressing as hell like almost all Otacon/Solid Snake. Heck, like almost all MGS pairings.

Hello world series by kriegersan
Pairing: Otacon/Solid Snake
Summary: "Philanthropy fic. Two people learning to understand one another."
Comments: Great depiction of Otacon and Snake's relationship and life together during the Philanthropy days. So in-character it feels like I'm watching a part of their lives cut from canon story line.

Comments: I love how the casual banters and poses humanizes the characters. Some of my favorite fanart out there because it's so in line with the themes of MGS.

MGS: HMPH by Supaa-Seto
Comments: Snake's fantasy in that one scene with Naomi and Otacon in MGS4. Funny and sad :(

MGS recs. Mostly (but not all) Bosselot

Well, MGSV came out and there's always this journal for some of my favorite fanfiction.

Shot Me Down by SewSewDef
Pairing: Big Boss/Ocelot
Summary: "NYC, 1964: Snake tries to adjust to civilian life. Ocelot's not helping."
Comments: Often described as "the one happy, domestic fic from an otherwise tragic ship" and I would have to agree. No heart-breaking loss of humanity here. Not only that but I appreciate the research and thought put into the fic. The little tidbits of what beer they would be drinking or the music available to them in the 60's makes me really feel like I'm there with them. Two super agents trying out this relationship thing when Ocelot is still young and arrogant and prickly and Big Boss is still a bit dense. It's...pretty good.

Zero Game by Nihilistic Fatality
Pairing: Big Boss/Ocelot, past Big Boss/EVA, Null/Sniper Wolf
Summary: "The assassination of JFK left a lasting scar upon the United States. But what went on behind the scenes proves once more that fact is stranger than fiction."
Tiger in Barbed Wire is a direct sequel and should absolutely be read despite its short, unfinished state because it is good regardless.
Summary: "Sequel to Zero Game. 1969 - Caught fast in Vietnam, America's secret war against the Kremlin is put on the back burner. With resources strained, Jack is sent on a solo mission in enemy territory. There he finds something someone tried very hard to misplace."
Comments: This is everything I didn't know I ever wanted. An AU where John is still Snake, divorced, and raising a young, adorable Solid Snake. This is almost exactly how I would want to imagine Big Boss and Ocelot's relationship to have been and the issues that would have been brought up with Ocelot as an x-tuple agent who isn't exactly a team player. AKA the one story where John rescues a missing Adam. And what's a Metal Gear Solid story without some crazy conspiracy theory as a plot point, some Ocelot backstabbing and interrogations, and a betrayal by someone you trust?

Anthem by Firefly99
Pairing: Big Boss/Ocelot
Summary: "They grew old together, and they decayed."
Comments: Pre-MGS4 fic.

Acknowledged by statisticsfag
Pairing: Big Boss/Ocelot/Venom Snake
Comments: Let's break up the heaviness with some double-pen, Ocelot sandwich, PWP.

I Handed You a Knife by Xiaojian
Pairing: Ocelot/Otacon
Summary: "While Metal Gear Rex is being prepared for launch, Ocelot learns something important: Hal Emmerich is an extremely stupid man. He also learns that he wouldn't change him for the world. (MGS1-era.)"
Comments: Somehow the pairing managed to work and it is strangely sweet.

Paradise by NanakiBH
Pairing: Big Boss/Ocelot
Summary: "Their world is a different place." Author's Note: "Most of the bosselot fics I've read have Ocelot on bottom, becoming really do-M for Big Boss. I found those fics enjoyable, but it made me wonder where all the fics about him being do-S are. He's a sadist in canon, so I was kinda surprised. I also really wanted to write Bottom Boss, so here's my contribution."
Comments: PWP, S&M Big Boss/Ocelot style. I completely agree with NanakiBH here on sadist!Ocelot.

Show of Shadows by Thatkindoffangirl
Pairing: Kaz/Ocelot
Summary: "It wasn’t the first time Kaz had snuck in to watch Ocelot perform. In fact, he’d been visiting the dungeons for weeks, each trip blissfully devoid of any kind of social interaction. Ocelot loved to ignore Kaz’s presence, to look the other way as Kaz limped to his favorite spot and watched him have his way with his chosen victim. Then, after the hapless person had given him what he wanted, Ocelot would silently clean everything until it sparkled and leave Kaz alone without exchanging a single word. He would even go as far as to switch the lights off behind him, just as one last reminder that Kaz was unwelcome.
He’d been an idiot to willingly go to such a man for help."
Comments: MGSV. Intense.

Kaleidoscope by NanakiBH
Pairing: Big Boss/Ocelot
Summary: "Everything is temporary except Adam's loyalty."
Comments: Post MGSV, Pre-MG1&2.

the father, the son, and the holy ghost by tattletwink
Pairing: Big Boss/Ocelot
Summary: "set a few months after the events of operation: snake eater big boss tries to work out his grief over the boss's death by fucking her son, eyyyyyy"
Comments: This. This is what I think would have gone through Big Boss's head about Ocelot and the Boss. If Big Boss was so torn up about the Boss's death, I don't think he would have taken Ocelot's parentage lightly at all if he knew. Because, well, after MGS4, like mother, like son. That would have burned because it's Big Boss's history repeating itself.

The Gift by Velasa
Pairing: Big Boss/Ocelot
Summary: "A short drabble set post MGS4, wherein an old soldier wakes up at the end of everything and realizes he's alone."
Comments: Yeah, this is practically canon for me. :(

Last of the Guardians rec? o_0 It's been a while.

I missed some GW and 1X5 action, scoured the internets and somehow, I stumbled upon BlackIce. I'm still not sure what happened, honestly but the fandom is pretty satisfying. It's like the world of Thor mixed with the dynamics of Harry/Snape, sorta. Except for the fact that Jack is much more Slytherin.

Untitled by Lindzzz
Pairing: Jack/Pitch
Prompt: Kozmotis goes enraged to pick up Seraphina who sneaked out to a club but gets sidetracked into dancing with that one cute twink ;D
Comments: Modern!AU. Cute, awkward, and strangely adorable. Plus, it inspired fanart! Hot Dad by Besteck.

Also check out Besteck's tribute to the Shadows and Light series.

Shadows and Light series by not_poignant
Pairing: Jack Frost/Pitch Black
Summary: (From the Darkness We Rise) Twenty two years have passed since the defeat of Pitch, and Jack lives alone, touch-starved, with only the company of a solitary Nightmare. One evening the Man in the Moon sets him on a path that will lead him to unexpected relationships, draw the attention of the Guardians to a new coalition of villains, and challenge Jack's every notion of what it is to be good, evil, and what it is to live in the shadows.

Shadows and Light: Fae Tales by not_poignant
Pairings: Gwyn/Augus primarily
Summary: A collection of stories from the fae side of things, including Game Theory, sequel to the Shadows and Light series. (Game Theory summary) Six months after Gwyn's defeat of the once Unseelie King, Augus Each Uisge, Gwyn has the fae waterhorse locked down in a cell, beneath the Seelie Court. In a difficult position himself, ruling an unwanted throne and waiting out the years between now and the time he can step down as King, Gwyn finds himself unable to stay away.

Comments: A warning: this series is not for the squeamish; loads and loads of porn, noncon and BDSM. That aside, I fell in love with the original characters. Usually, I'm not too much of a fan of original characters but Not Poignant's OC's are complex, intelligent, and thoroughly interesting. They have their own back story and Not Poignant writes some of the best character interactions I've ever read, fanwork or otherwise. Well, more accurately, it's some of the best weaving of character history and interactions. Character's limited perception is taken into account and misunderstandings can happen in the most organic way as they try to understand each other, sometimes with very brutal methods.
I love Gwyn. He very much reminds me of Berserk's Griffith. They both have a ruthless, manipulative, indomitable will and you can't believe how happy I am to find Gwyn older, wiser, more vulnerable, and less controlled (and if also slightly less clever). I love what I've seen of the Raven Prince and Augus's role as an antagonist is not a black and white issue.

Well, now.

Haven't been on for a while. Because I'm getting married. Weirdness.

Yep, quietly freaking out. I never imagined being married anywhere before turning 35 but here I am.

Young Justice

Finally watched Young Justice and it was awesome! They have Bart, my favorite character. And I loved Roy. And Tim actually was the third Robin, not his personality spliced onto Dick. So DC recs. Somehow, I ended up missing Jason/Tim.

Partners by heartslogos
Pairing: Roy Harper/Tim Drake
Summary: "If he doesn't kill you," X answers, "he makes you stronger."
Comments: A Young Justice/comics/Teen Titans villains!AU of Roy and Tim, heavy on the villains!Young Justice AU. I love the surprising use of Jason Todd and Red X within the Young Justice universe or AUs thereof.
Roy was already kinda going down a pretty dark road in Young Justice but this is the Tim that could have been.

X Marks the Spot by alpha_hydra
Pairing: Dick Grayson/Jason Todd?
Summary: Nightwing sees a ghost, and the little birds and bats are tasked with bringing him home.
Comments: Young Justice/Red Hood: The Lost Days/Teen Titans fusion but mainly in the Young Justice universe. A logical yet exciting step when combining Red Hood: The Lost Days with Young Justice, which, really, might as well be canon. Another great use of Jason and Red X with competent heroes because I value a competently written Batfamily who knows their gadgets, weapons, and hand-to-hand. Plus great Jason and Arsenal dynamics. They do have a lot in common. Anger issues, mentor issues, love of explosives.

The Crash, The Mode, And Everything In Between series by orphan_account
Pairing: Bart Allen/Jaime Reyes
Summary: Jaime and Bart date. Stuff happens. And still, they date.
Comments: Exactly how I imagine Bart/Jaime would pan out if they ever decided to get together which would mean lots of hanging out, sociopathic Scarab stating death threats, and cute misunderstandings. My version of fluff, I suppose.

If we couldn't carry our dead inside us, we would be empty. (emptier, I mean.) by failsafe
Pairing: Roy Harper/Jade Nguyen, Roy Harper/Kaldur'ahm
Summary: When Tuλa died, Kaldur needed something. Someone.
Comments: There needs to be more Roy and Kal fics. There was basically a line where we learn Roy and Kaldur were friends but it is golden potential since both Roy and Kaldur have very complicated lives and this story doesn't avoid any of the complications. In a short one-shot, we have infidelity, Jade's pregnancy, Roy's self-destruction and drug use, and Kaldur'ahm dealing with Tula's death before he goes deep undercover. Also, the story does a good job capturing their voices.
